Ansible Server Installation & Configuration – Support Document

1. Overview

This document explains how to install and configure Ansible on a Linux server for remotely deploying the Workstatus App to supported user systems.
The Ansible server acts as the central deployment system from which installation scripts or playbooks are executed on target systems.

Deployment Flow

Linux Ansible Server → Ansible → Target User System → Workstatus App

2. Server System Prerequisites

Before installing Ansible, ensure the following requirements are met:

  • The server system must be a Linux-based system.
  • The server must have internet connectivity.
  • The server must have administrator/sudo access.
  • SSH must be available for communication with supported target systems.
  • The server must be able to communicate with the target user systems over the network.

3.Install Ansible

Open the terminal on the Linux server and run the following commands.
Step 1 – Update Package Repository

  • sudo apt update

Step 2 – Install SSH

  • sudo apt install ssh -y

Step 3 – Install Software Properties Common

  • sudo apt install software-properties-common -y

Step 4 – Add Ansible Repository

  • sudo add-apt-repository --yes --update ppa:ansible/ansible

Step 5 – Install Ansible

  • sudo apt install ansible -y

4.Verify Ansible Installation

After installation, verify that Ansible is installed successfully.
Run:

  • ansible --version

The command should display the installed Ansible version and configuration details.
Example:
ansible [core ...]

5.Configure SSH

SSH is required to establish communication between the Ansible server and Linux target systems.
Start SSH Service :

  • sudo systemctl start ssh

Enable SSH at System Startup

  • sudo systemctl enable ssh

Check SSH Status :

  • sudo systemctl status ssh

The expected status is:
Active: active (running)


Note: SSH configuration for Windows and macOS may require OS-specific configuration. Refer to the respective OS deployment document.

6.Verify Network Connectivity

Before starting deployment, verify that the Ansible server can communicate with the target system.
Example:
ping
Example:
ping 192.168.3.7

7.Verify SSH Connection

For a Linux target system, test the SSH connection from the Ansible server.
ssh @
Example:
ssh pradeep@192.168.3.7
If the connection is successful, the server can communicate with the target system through SSH.

9.Verify Ansible Connectivity

After configuring the inventory, verify that Ansible can communicate with the target Linux system.
Run:

  • ansible all -i inventory.ini -m ping

A successful connection should return:

  • SUCCESS
