How to Deprecate and Reactivate a Shift in Workstatus

How to Deprecate and Reactivate a Shift in Workstatus

1. Overview

In Workstatus, created shifts cannot be deleted. However, organization owners can deprecate a shift when it is no longer required.
When a shift is deprecated, all members assigned to that shift are automatically reassigned to the General Shift from the next business day. The deprecated shift remains active until its scheduled end time on the day it is deprecated.
If required, the organization owner can also reactivate a deprecated shift. Reactivation becomes effective from the next business day.

2. How to Deprecate a Shift

Follow these steps to deprecate a shift:

  • Log in to Workstatus using the Owner account.
  • Navigate to Settings → Schedules & Time Off → Shift Management.
  • Select the By Shift tab.
  • Find the shift you want to deprecate.
  • Click the three-dot menu under the Actions column.
  • Select Deprecate Shift.
  • Confirm the action if prompted.

The selected shift will be deprecated according to the shift's scheduled end time.

Note : The shift stays effective for the current business day. Open versions are closed at end of today, and assigned users move to the organization default shift from the next business day. Historical records remain intact.

3. What Happens When a Shift Is Deprecated?

  • The shift cannot be deleted from Workstatus.
  • The deprecated shift remains active until its scheduled end time on the day it is deprecated.
  • All members assigned to the deprecated shift are automatically reassigned to the General Shift from the next business day.
  • The reassignment takes effect according to the deprecated shift's scheduled end time.

Example
Suppose a shift runs from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and the owner deprecates it at 11:00 AM.

  • 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM: The shift remains active, and assigned members continue under the existing shift.
  • At 6:00 PM: The deprecated shift's effective period ends.
  • From the next business day: All members previously assigned to the deprecated shift are automatically reassigned to the General Shift.

4. How to Reactivate a Deprecated Shift

If a deprecated shift is needed again, the organization owner can reactivate it.
Follow these steps:

  • Log in to Workstatus using the Owner account.
  • Navigate to Settings → Schedules & Time Off → Shift Management.
  • Open the By Shift tab.
  • Find the deprecated shift.
  • By default, deprecated shifts are moved to the bottom of the shift list.
  • Click the three-dot menu under the Actions column.
  • Select the available reactivation option.
  • Confirm the action if prompted.

The shift will be reactivated, and the change will become effective from the next business day.

5. Important Notes

  • Shifts cannot be deleted once created.
  • Deprecating a shift does not stop it immediately; it remains active until its scheduled end time on the day of deprecation.
  • Members assigned to a deprecated shift are automatically moved to the General Shift from the next business day.
  • Only the organization owner should manage shift deprecation and reactivation.
  • Reactivating a deprecated shift does not take effect immediately; it becomes effective from the next business day.
