Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 Silent App Installation via Ansible


Overview

This document explains how to install the Workstatus Silent App remotely on a Linux user system using Ansible from a Linux server system.

Installation Flow

Linux Server → Ansible → Linux User System → Workstatus Silent App


1. Server System Requirements

The server system is the Linux machine from which the Workstatus Silent App installation will be triggered.
The following packages are required on the server:

  • The server system must be a Linux-based system.
  • Ansible
  • SSH
  • Software Properties Common


1.1 Install Ansible

Open the terminal on the server system and run the following commands:

  • sudo apt update
  • sudo apt install ssh -y
  • sudo apt install software-properties-common -y
  • sudo add-apt-repository --yes --update ppa:ansible/ansible
  • sudo apt install ansible -y

Verify Ansible Installation

  • ansible --version

If Ansible is installed successfully, the installed Ansible version will be displayed.


1.2 Enable SSH on the Server

SSH is required for communication between the Ansible server and the target Linux system.
Note: This step is optional if SSH is already enabled.
Start the SSH service:

  • sudo systemctl start ssh

Enable SSH to start automatically after reboot:

  • sudo systemctl enable ssh

Check the SSH service status:

  • sudo systemctl status ssh

The status should show:
Active: active (running)


2.User System Requirements

The user/target Linux system is the machine where the Workstatus Silent App will be installed.

2.1 System Wayland should be disbled

2.2Install Ansible

Install Ansible on the user system if required.
Run following command:

  • sudo apt update
  • sudo apt install ssh -y
  • sudo apt install software-properties-common -y
  • sudo add-apt-repository --yes --update ppa:ansible/ansible
  • sudo apt install ansible -y

Verify the installation:

  • ansible --version


3. Server System Actions

3.1 Configure Inventory File

Download the Linux Silent App Zip file provided for the Workstatus Silent App installation.
Extract zip file and open inventory file. The inventory file contains the details required to connect to the user's Linux system.
Open inventory.ini and enter:

  • User system IP address
  • System username
  • System password
  • Workstatus user email address

For multiple Windows systems, copy the entry to a new line and update the IP address, username, password, and email for each user.
Example
1XX.1XX.3.X user=admin pass=admin email=useremail@example .com
1XX.1XX.3.X user=admin pass=admin email=useremail@example .com


Note : Replace the values with the actual user's details.


3.2. Run the Installation

Open the terminal in the directory where inventory.ini and setup file are stored and Run following command.

The script will use the information from inventory.ini to connect to the target Linux system and install the Workstatus Silent App.


4.User Action After Installation

  • After the Workstatus Silent App is successfully installed via Ansible, the user must restart the system to complete the installation.
  • After the system restart, the Workstatus Silent App will start automatically and work on the user's system.



5. Verify Installation

Log in to the Workstatus Admin Account and navigate to:
People → Employees → Select the Employee
Under the employee's name, verify that the Working status is displayed. This confirms that the Workstatus Silent App is working correctly on the user's system.


5. Troubleshooting

5.1 SSH Connection Failed

Check whether SSH is running on the target system:

  • sudo systemctl status ssh

If SSH is not running:

  • sudo systemctl start ssh

Enable SSH:

  • sudo systemctl enable ssh

Test the connection manually from the Ansible server:

  • ssh username@IP_ADDRESS

Example:
ssh username@1XX.1XX.X.X


5.2 Check Network Connectivity

From the server, check whether the target system is reachable:

  • ping 1XX.1XX.X.X

Replace 1XX.1XX.X.X with the target system's IP address.


5.3 Verify Ansible Connection

Run:

  • ansible all -i inventory.ini -m ping

If the connection is successful, Ansible should return:

  • SUCCESS


6. Important Notes

  • The server system must be able to communicate with the target Linux system over SSH.
  • The target Linux system must have a valid Linux username and password.
  • Ensure the IP address entered in inventory.ini is correct.
  • inventory.ini and setup.ssh.sh must be in the same directory.
  • Make sure the required firewall/SSH port is accessible.
  • Do not share inventory.ini publicly because it may contain user credentials.
  • Use Ansible Vault or SSH keys when handling production credentials.
