How is Time Tracked and Calculated in Workstatus?

Workstatus does not assume that a worker is active at their computer for the entire time they are tracking.

To determine a worker's activity level, Workstatus considers several factors, including:

  • When the Start and Stop buttons are used in the desktop tracking application.
  • Whether any portion of the work session was marked as idle due to periods of inactivity.
  • How frequently the worker uses their keyboard and mouse during the tracked session.

Based on this information, Workstatus calculates an activity percentage, which serves as a baseline metric for assessing how active your team is during their tracked work sessions.

Let’s go through an example to demonstrate how this can be applied to your organization:

Example

Notice that the time range for this worker is 8:20 AM – 9:00 AM. However, the tracked time within each 10-minute interval does not always total 10 minutes. In this example, one interval contain only 1 minutes of tracked activity.

At first glance, it may appear that the worker tracked 50 minutes of work. However, Workstatus detected that the worker was actually active for only 31 minutes during that period. This is because Workstatus tracks activity with minute-level precision. Over time, these seemingly small periods of inactivity can add up to hours of unproductive time.

You'll also notice an activity percentage displayed alongside the tracked minutes. This percentage is calculated by analyzing every second of tracked time:

  • Active: Mouse movement or keyboard input is detected.
  • Inactive: No mouse or keyboard activity is detected.

Workstatus uses this data to calculate an activity percentage for each 10-minute interval. In this example, the worker maintained an average activity level of approximately 58% during the 31 minutes of active work.
